Unheard of before – Belarusian dictator apologized to Zelensky

Belarus’ leader, Alexander Lukashenko, has publicly apologized to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for previous statements that may have offended him. In a public statement, Lukashenko said he may have gone “too far” in his criticism of the Ukrainian leader, admitting that he should not have been so harsh given that Ukraine continues to face war. “If Volodymyr Oleksandrovych felt offended, I apologize for those words. Perhaps I should not have spoken so harshly, considering that he is still at war,” Lukashenko declared. The Belarusian leader also spoke about Kiev’s fears regarding the possibility of a new front opening from the north, emphasizing that Belarus’ involvement in the conflict is not in his country’s interests. According to him, entering the war would be “unacceptable,” as it would bring more negative consequences than benefits to Belarus. “Belarus is very vulnerable from a military point of view if Ukraine starts attacking us in the same way it attacks Russia,” he said. Lukashenko’s statements come at a time when relations between Minsk and Kiev remain tense due to the close support that Belarus has given to Russia since the beginning of its invasion of Ukraine. However, the public apology to Zelensky is an unusual move by the Belarusian leader, who has rarely publicly softened his rhetoric towards Ukrainian leaders. /Telegraph
