Thousands of people have taken to the streets of a German city to protest against the far-right AfD party, blocking roads leading to the site of its annual convention. The protesters, made up of unions, civil society organizations and left-wing parties, gathered in the eastern German city of Erfurt.
For security reasons, police had deployed a large number of forces in the city during the two-day AfD conference. According to police, around 15,000 people took part in the protests, blocking highways and roads leading to the convention center where the event was taking place.
Protesters say they will not tolerate the rise of extremism in Germany, while various organizations have called for resistance to the AfD. The party convention takes place at a time when the AfD is rising in the polls and preparing for important regional elections in eastern Germany, while other parties have ruled out any cooperation with it. /Telegraph
